Dr. Blaom is a mathematician and senior Research Fellow at the University of Auckland, collaborating with members of the Data Science and its Applications (DSA) Research Group through a partnership between the University and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). He is a co-creator and lead developer of the Machine Learning in Julia platform, and devotes his time in roughly equal portions between Julia software development and research.
These days Dr. Blaom’s research is mostly related to applied statistics and machine learning. However, he remains active in differential geometry, his main area of research since the early 2000’s. Early research was in fluid mechanics (chaotic advection), Hamiltonian perturbation theory, and geometric mechanics.
Dr. Blaom enjoys reading stories to his grandchildren and long hikes in the New Zealand mountains.
